Dotted around South Ribble are a number of Fire Hydrant Stones. These stones would be the original way that the fire service indicated where the nearest fire hydrant water source would be located.
The carved stones either have FP (for fire point) or H (for hydrant) marked on them and then a number. The ones with the plates have FH (for fire hydrant) and appear to mark the distance (as would a current yellow plastic marker). The older carved stones appear to have a number that denotes which marker it is. I assume that would then be unique to that stone. Certainly the ones found so far don’t repeat any numbers.
These stones are very rare examples of our past heritage and should be protected and preserved at all costs.
I am trying to compile a list of them and record their locations. If you should find one please take a picture and take a What3Word location and email me the details at chris _ cactus _ corner @ yahoo . co . uk (no spaces). Thank you.
[note, FHM 03 is located outside of the South Ribble area]
